Easy & Fun: Texture Repousse Lesson for Art 1

Your Students Will Love This Texture Repousse Lesson!

I really neglected this blog last year.  In my defense, I was in the midst of a difficult year in my personal life.  My marriage of 16 years ended and it was a huge adjustment period.  It was a struggle to just get through the day, let alone post on the blog!  But, I’m back this year and motivated to be a better teacher!

Currently I’m LOVING my new semester!  I have two groups of Art 1 and one small Advanced class (a mix of Art 3, 4 and AP Art & Design).

Art 1 just finished up their unit on Texture and I decided to brave a Texture Repousse lesson with them! The classes this semester are a bit smaller than usual.  So I was able to afford to do this aluminum repousse lesson with them!  I purchased some thicker 36 gauge aluminum on a roll and cut it down so each student got about a 12″ x 9″ sheet.  Be careful! The edges are SO SHARP!

They seem to enjoy the process, although getting them to really get deep convex and concave designs with them was difficult!  They just wanna barely scratch it and think that it is done!

I show them a YouTube video that shows real Repousse and Chasing techniques on metal.  Then I show them this video of the technique of aluminum metal tooling.

Warning: Refrain from using the phrase “flip it over and do it from behind” with high schoolers.  Yeah, that really happened.  Whoops.

We had some decent outcomes this time.  I was pretty happy as this was my first time having them create recognizable subjects using the aluminum.  I had tried a texture repousse lesson in the past with art 1 but we used non-objective pattern designs.  That was fun too!

Here are some of their results:
